*ESSAY WRITING*

*Features of a good letter*

In this section, the main things that are taken into consideration when marking are,
Content -10 marks.
Organisation - 10 marks.
Expression - 20 marks.
Mechanical Accuracy - 10 marks.
*Content:* Content implies your ability to write on the topic you have been asked to write on. This mean, write what is required. Make sure what you write corresponds to what is requested. Make sure your ideas are relevant to the topic.

*Organisation:* Here the examiner will access your ability to write a well organised letter;
(a) Well written address (es).
(b) Salutation.
(c) title.
(d) Proper arrangement of paragraphs.
(e) Concluding salutation.

*Expression:* Control of vocabulary and sentence structure. This is widely influence by mechanical accuracy. You are required to write very well on the points you have been asked in your letter. You are expected to write freely and convince your examiner about the points you have mentioned. For example, if you are asked to discuss the illness affecting a friend of yours. State the specific illness, what causes it, what are its effects and what are the possible treatments. Also use the terms and expression related to the medical field.

*Mechanical Accuracy:* Mechanical accuracy implies spelling mistakes, punctuation errors, tense errors, grammatical mistakes, wrong use of words and expression. The examiner is expected to circle each grammatical error he/she finds. Each circle will earn the candidate minus half (1/2). As a result every candidate should be very careful while writing and always takes time to proof-reading his/her letter before submitting it.

*WHEN TO CHANGE PARAGRAPH?*

The simple rule is, *a new paragraph for a new idea.*
*Time -* In writing any sort of essay, we change paragraph when time move forwards or backwards. In other words, as long as the time you are writing about is changed and you want to write on another time, you must start another paragraph.

*Examples:* The next day... When evening came... Last week...
*Place -* Writing about a new location also deserves a new paragraph. If you were writing about an incident that took place in a house and now you want to write about what happened in the street or in a bus, then you should start another paragraph.
*Example:* In the veranda... Out of the field... Behind the house...
*Issue -* Also, when something new is happening you should start another paragraph.
*Example:* While we were discussing (same time) she came to the room and asked if lunch was ready and... (something new is happening).

*A flash back*

*A new character is introduced*

*A new speaker if it is a passage of dialogue*
