- The basic social unit among the Loko was the household(family). It was an extended family type under the headship of a man. Age was a prerequisite for succession to household leadership. The eldest son usually take charge after the death of the father, then the brother.

- The pre-colonial Loko practised polygamous marriage. A man was allowed to many women as he could. Marriage transactions were highly celebrated, with the parents of the groom and the bride playing a leading role.

- Marriage between close relatives was forbidden. It was a taboo and it's breach was considered incestuous. Victims were forced to run naked to the stream, river and sea where they were ceremoniously washed with black soap and special herbs. They were flogged in the process. They were also given special charms cooked with male and female dogs to eat.

- Every Loko clan had a totem-a particular plant, animal or object they must not use. It was believed that the totem held the fate of the clan and when used, disaster would befall it's member.

- The Loko had secret societies which played a pivotal role in their lives. The poro for men and the Bondo  for women were the major secret societies and they preformed varied and many functions among Loko. The girls graduated from Bondo society with new names. They were named in the sequence of arrival(initiation) in the Bondo. Hence Rukor, Burah, Yenoh, Sathee, and so on.
